Hi,
As we continue to grow in unexpected directions, I feel that now is the
time to decide the best way to specify and implement a system to
determine package usage patterns.
My goal is something that is completely anonymous, unobtrusive, secure,
and integrated in to the system.
It is of course possible to use HTTP access logs to see what APK files
are being transferred, but this only shows installs - not uninstalls.
Such a solution also doesn't show usage over time. (Is someone just
trying out KDE and then throwing it away, or are they using it as their
daily driver?)
To that end, I propose a system somewhat like Debian's
popularity-contest (popcon). ( See
https://popcon.debian.org/FAQ )
I have drafted a rough specification, which is available at
https://adelielinux.org/register.html right now.
I'd really like to flesh out a full specification by March, so if anyone
has comments on the current specification, or further goals or ideas for
this project, please respond to this message with them.
All the best,
--arw
